Purpose:
The purpose of this e-resource is to introduce students to different aspects of different cultures, particularly those who has assimilated into Australian society. With the cultural diversity of Australia being so strong, we aim to develop in students an understanding and knowledge of cultures and what they bring to Australia. Ultimately resulting in students gaining an appreciation and respect for the cultural diversity of Australia.
How to Use This E-Resource:
This e-resource has been designed to be used individually, in partners or in small groups. It is used to introduce students to a variety of cultures as part of the 'tuning in' phase. We chose to create a weekly for our e-resource. It will allow students to work at their own pace and choose the areas that interest them the most to begin with, thus maximising participation and interest.
The topic or cultural diversity can be used for Year 4 to 6 students. It can also be used anytime throughout the year. From Chinese New Year and linking that to different cultural traditions, to Harmony Day, and Christmas traditions around the world. It also covers much of the curriculum and can be linked cross curricularly to areas including humanities, the arts and health & physical education.
Guiding Questions:
What does is mean to be Australian?
How does life in Australia compare to that of other countries?
How do other cultures influence Australian society?
Inquiry Process:
Tuning In - Students complete different activities about a chosen country.
Finding Out - Looking at Australian society, conduct a cultural survey of the school, or grandparents of different nationalities can come in and talk to the class about their experiences in Australia and what being here means to them.
Sorting - Gather the information from the surveys or grandparent talks to see what these cultures have brought to Australia.
Going Further - Students choose any country they wish to create a cultural profile on.
Reflection - They then link their cultural profile to Australian society and how that culture has assimilated into Australian society.
Action - Students turn their information into a weebly page about their country.
